How to build a team that actually wins
1) Pick the right team size
A tight team usually beats a giant one. Aim for 4 to 6 people so you can cover more topics without turning every question into a committee meeting.
Team roles that work
- The Captain: final answer caller, keeps things moving
- The Pop Culture Brain: movies, music, TV
- The Sports Person: teams, stats, local and national
- The History or Geography Person: dates, places, “map questions”
- The Wild Card: random facts, wordplay, weird trivia
2) Agree on “final answer rules” before Round 1
You will win more points by avoiding last-second panic swaps.
Our favorite rule:
If two people are confident and one person is guessing, you go with confidence.
3) Do one fast confidence vote
When the question drops, do this:
- 10 seconds silent thinking
- everyone says their answer
- quick confidence vote (1 to 5)
- captain locks it
It keeps your table from spiraling.
Game night tactics that actually work at bar trivia
4) Write the boring details down
A lot of points get lost from “almost right.”
- spelling
- full names
- exact years
- correct units
If the question asks for “name and year,” give both.
5) Watch for trick wording
Trivia questions love qualifiers:
- first, most, only, original, closest, highest, oldest
- according to (means the source matters)
- in the US (limits the scope)
Slow down for those.
6) Use elimination like it is a sport
If you do not know the answer, eliminate what you know is wrong.
- does the timeline match?
- does the geography make sense?
- does the category fit the hint?
A good guess is usually a narrowed guess.
7) Save the phone, save the vibe
Trivia is better when the table is locked in. You will hear more, catch more hints, and actually have fun.
What to order during trivia
Trivia is two things at once: a competition and a hang. Drinks that work best are the ones that are easy to sip for a full game.
Good trivia picks
- a draft you like and can reorder quickly
- a simple cocktail you do not have to babysit
- a bottle of wine for the table if your group is posted up for the full night
If you want to line it up with deals, check our rotating Drink Specials page before you come in.
How to prep in 10 minutes without being a try-hard
If your team is serious about winning, do this once on the drive over:
- run a lightning round of “name 10” lists: countries, Oscar winners, NFL teams, famous bands
- pick one “specialty topic” each person owns for the night
- decide your captain
That is enough.
Make it a full Thursday plan
Trivia starts at 6:30 PM, so the easiest move is:
- arrive a little early
- grab a spot and get settled
- play through 8:00 PM
- keep the night going after with whatever is happening next on our calendar
